23 and Just Starting College: Huwag Kang Matakot, Kaya ‘Yan!

Turning 23 this year and feeling that late-bloomer energy? Don’t worry, ‘di ka nag-iisa! We’ve all been there – staring at the college application, wondering if our ballpen’s ink is enough for all those forms, feeling like everyone else is on a rocket to success while we’re still figuring out which jeep to ride.

This one’s for you, my fellow late bloomers. Let’s break those college anxieties down, para mas ma-enjoy natin ang college journey natin, no matter what age we’re starting at.

“Sayang” daw? Bahala Sila!

One word: pressure. It’s real, especially when you hit your early 20s and people start throwing around words like “delayed” and, the ever-dreaded, “sayang.” You might hear:

  • “Naku, dapat nag-aral ka na lang agad.”
  • “Malapit ka na sana matapos.”
  • “Ano na lang sasabihin ng kapitbahay?”

Let’s get real, those comments sting like a shot of vinegar in your fishball. But you know what? It’s YOUR life. Your college journey is your own timeline, and it’s never too late to chase those dreams.

Here’s a little secret: Most people giving unsolicited advice? They’re dealing with their own anxieties. So, smile politely, nod, and then do what’s best for YOU.

From MedTech to BMMA: My Great Leap of Faith

Let’s talk about pressure, but this time, it’s from family. We love them, we do, but sometimes, they push us towards what they think is “best” for us, even if it doesn’t align with our own dreams.

Like the OP, I get it. My family? They were practically building a clinic in the backyard, hoping I’d magically transform into a doctor. MedTech was the compromise. But after a year and a half, I knew I couldn’t live a lie – a very expensive lie, considering tuition fees!

So, I took a deep breath, had a heart-to-heart talk with my family (more like a series of conversations involving lots of tears and dramatic sighs), and finally switched to BMMA. Was it scary? Absolutely! But you know what’s scarier? Waking up ten years from now, wearing a lab coat and wondering, “What if I pursued my passion for filmmaking?”

Financial Woes: Been There, Budget-ed That

Let’s be real, finances are a huge factor in deciding when to start college. Tuition fees? Skyrocketing faster than the price of onions! And let’s not forget about books, transportation, and the occasional milk tea splurge.

Here’s the good news: there are ways to make it work:

  • Scholarships: Tons of options, from government-funded to private organizations, even those specifically for “non-traditional” students.
  • Part-Time Work: Channel your inner working student! Even a few hours a week can make a difference.
  • Talk to Your College’s Financial Aid Office: They can point you to resources and options you may not even know exist.

Remember, financial stability is key to a smoother college experience. Don’t be afraid to explore your options and find a setup that works for you.

Irregular Student Life: Embrace the Chaos

Okay, so you’re a bit older than the typical freshman. You might feel out of place, like a balikbayan who still says “comfort room” instead of “toilet.” But here’s the thing – being an irregular student comes with its own set of perks:

  • Life Experience: You’ve got stories to tell, insights to share, and a level of maturity (hopefully!) that can enrich classroom discussions.
  • Clearer Goals: You’ve had time to figure out what you want (and don’t want), making your academic choices more focused.
  • Better Time Management: Juggling responsibilities is second nature to you. You, my friend, are a master of the balancing act!

Embrace the uniqueness of your situation. You bring a fresh perspective to the classroom.

Tips for Surviving (and Thriving!) in College at 23:

1. Find Your Tribe: Connect with fellow students, join clubs, attend events. It might take a little effort, but finding your people will make all the difference. And hey, age is just a number. Some of the best friendships are formed between people from different walks of life.

2. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help: Professors, academic advisors, even the librarian – they’re there to guide you. Need help with a subject? Ask! Confused about registration procedures? Ask! Unsure about where to get the best kwek-kwek on campus? Definitely ask!

3. Embrace the Learning Process: You’re there to learn, and that includes making mistakes. Don’t be afraid to experiment, try new things, and step outside of your comfort zone. This is your time to explore!

4. Celebrate Small Victories: Finished a challenging assignment? Aced a quiz? Successfully navigated the campus without getting lost? Give yourself a pat on the back! College is a marathon, not a sprint.

5. Stay True to Yourself: You’ve got this. Don’t compare your journey to others. Focus on your goals, celebrate your progress, and remember why you took this leap of faith.

To My Fellow 23-Year-Old College Newbies:

Starting college at 23 (or any age, really) can feel like jumping onto a moving jeepney. It’s scary, exhilarating, and a little bit crazy. But trust me, it’s an adventure worth taking.

So, go forth, my fellow late bloomers! Embrace the challenges, celebrate the victories, and remember: it’s never too late to chase your dreams. At least hindi pa tayo late sa graduation! 😉
