From Kontrabida sa Kalkulasyon to Kapatid ng Calculus: My UPCAT Math Survival Guide

Let’s be real, mga ‘tol. We’ve all been there. That moment when you realize your brain transforms into taho every time you see an equation. That feeling na parang mas madaling intindihin ang love life ni Angelica Panganiban kesa sa long division.

I get it. The struggle is real, especially when the UPCAT looms like a tita waiting to judge your every move (and math score). You’re a consistent honor student, the pride of your clan, but math? Math is your ultimate kryptonite.

Incoming Grade 12 ka na, and the pressure is on! “Pero bakit ganun?!” You scream internally as you stare at fractions like they hold the secrets to the universe (which, let’s be honest, they kind of do). “Ni hindi ko nga alam ang difference ng LCD sa GCF!”

And to top it all off, you didn’t even choose STEM. Insert dramatic sigh worthy of a teleserye here.

Listen up, kapwa ko bobo sa math (charot!). This is for us. We’re gonna turn that “nganga” into “na-gets ko na!”

Conquering Your Math Fears: Para ‘to sa mga Sawimpalad sa Numbers!

1. Acceptance is Key (But Not the “Tanggap na Bobo Ako” Kind)

First things first, let’s ditch the self-pity party. Walang mangyayari kung magmumukmok ka lang dyan. Instead of drowning yourself in anxiety, let’s face this challenge head-on, parang nag-rereview ka lang for a quiz bee na may premyong libreng Jollibee for life!

2. Diagnose Your Math “Sakit”

Remember those times na nagdodrawing ka lang sa likod ng notebook mo during Math time? Yeah, those were fun times. But now, it’s time to face the music (or should I say, the math).

  • Take a Diagnostic Test: Think of it as a checkup for your math skills. Don’t worry, walang injections here! There are tons of free diagnostic tests online (shoutout to Google!). This will pinpoint your weaknesses. Are you struggling with fractions? Algebra got you feeling like you’re deciphering ancient hieroglyphics? Identify those weak points!
  • Mark Your Territory (Or in this case, Your Answers): This is crucial! When taking the test, mark whether you guessed the answer or if you were sure of it. This will help you identify areas where you need to focus. Baka naman kasi kaya mali ang sagot mo kasi nagkamali ka lang ng basa? O kaya naman, tama pala yung hula mo! It’s time to separate the lucky guesses from the “I actually know this” answers.

3. Back to Basics Tayo, Bes (But Not “Bes” Nga Pala)

Remember those elementary days filled with multiplication tables and number lines? Yeah, it’s time to revisit those happy memories (or not-so-happy memories, depending on your math history).

  • Embrace the Power of YouTube University: Forget expensive tutors! YouTube is your new best friend. There are tons of amazing channels out there that explain math concepts in a way that even your tito who can’t tell time can understand. Check out channels like The Organic Chemistry Tutor, Khan Academy, and even Filipino YouTubers who break down math concepts for Pinoy students.
  • Start with the Fundamentals: Don’t jump into solving complex equations if you haven’t mastered the basics yet. It’s like trying to cook adobo without knowing how to use a knife (spoiler alert: it won’t end well). Go back to the basics of fractions, decimals, algebra, and geometry. Once you have a strong foundation, everything else will follow.

4. Practice, Practice, Practice! (Pero Wag Magsawa)

Dito tayo nasasablay eh. We hear “practice” and we suddenly develop a severe case of “mamaya na” syndrome. But trust me, practice is the key to unlocking your inner math wizard (or at least, your inner math marunong).

  • Don’t Rush the Process: You’re not in a race. Don’t pressure yourself with timed practice tests just yet. Focus on understanding the concepts and solving problems at your own pace. Remember, slow and steady wins the race (especially if the race involves fractions and decimals).
  • Embrace the Power of Practice Tests: Once you feel confident with the basics, it’s time to test your skills. Look for UPCAT practice tests online or buy review books (wag naman pirated, bes!).
  • Analyze Your Mistakes: Don’t just look at the score! Analyze your mistakes and figure out where you went wrong. Did you misread the problem? Did you forget a formula? Learning from your mistakes is key to improvement.

5. Time to Put Your Game Face On: Timed Practice Tests

This is it, pansit! Now that you’ve got the basics down and you’ve been practicing like a boss, it’s time to see how you fare under pressure.

  • Simulate the Real Deal: Find a quiet place, set a timer, and pretend you’re actually taking the UPCAT. This will help you get used to the time pressure and identify areas where you need to speed up.
  • Don’t Freak Out: It’s normal to feel nervous, but don’t let it get the best of you. Remember, this is just a practice test. The real UPCAT won’t have flying cockroaches or your mom shouting “Kumakain na!” in the middle of your exam (hopefully).

6. Aim for Consistency, Not Perfection

Listen, I’m not gonna lie and say you need to get a perfect score on the math portion of the UPCAT. Unless you’re aiming to be the next Fibonacci or something, a perfect score is not the goal. The goal is to get a score that’s good enough to get you into your dream course and university.

  • 75% is Your New Best Friend: Don’t beat yourself up if you’re not getting perfect scores on your practice tests. Aim for a consistent average of 75% or higher. That shows that you understand the concepts and you’re able to apply them effectively.

7. Keep the Faith, Kapatid!

This is the most important tip of all. Believe in yourself! You are capable of acing that UPCAT math exam. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, not even your inner voice that’s been whispering doubts in your ear. You’ve got this!

Remember, the journey to conquering UPCAT math may not be easy, but it’s definitely possible. Just keep pushing, keep learning, and keep believing in yourself. And hey, if all else fails, there’s always Accountancy! Charot! (But seriously, there are a lot of options out there, even if you don’t get your dream course on the first try).

Kayang-kaya mo yan! Now go out there and conquer that UPCAT!
