The “Prime Days” of My IT Journey: Finding the Spark Again

Ugh, guys, have you ever felt like you’re stuck in a rut? Like, you used to have this fire in your belly for something, but now it’s just… poof, gone?

That’s me right now. 😭 My IT journey was all about that youthful energy, that “I can do anything” attitude. Shs days were like my golden era. 👑 Every coding challenge was a chance to level up, every competition was a test of my skills. I was a coding ninja, a tech warrior, a… well, you get the picture.

But then, bam, college hit. And then, bam, the pandemic hit. 💥 And somewhere along the way, my fire started to flicker. It felt like I was stuck in a tech graveyard, surrounded by code that didn’t spark any joy. 🧟‍♀️

What happened to my coding spirit? Was it the overwhelming pressure of college? Or the pandemic blues that sucked the life out of everything? Was it the endless sea of new technologies that made me feel lost and overwhelmed? Or maybe, just maybe, I just got lazy?

The Pandemic Hangover

It’s not easy feeling like you’ve lost your mojo, especially when you’re starting a new career as a Junior Dev. It’s like walking into a party where everyone’s already having a blast, and you’re just standing there, feeling awkward and unsure of yourself.

Feeling like a Tech Dinosaur

The truth is, the IT landscape changes faster than you can say “Artificial Intelligence”. 🌪️ New frameworks, languages, and tools pop up every day, and it’s hard to keep up. I feel like I’m constantly playing catch-up, and the pressure to learn everything is real. It’s enough to make you feel like a tech dinosaur in a world of unicorns. 🦕

The Fear of Being Left Behind

I know I’m not alone in this. Many fresh grads feel like they’re lagging behind, like they’re not up to par. It’s easy to fall into the comparison trap and start questioning your abilities.

Rekindling the Spark

So, what can we do about this post-pandemic tech slump? How do we find that fire again? How do we re-ignite our passion for coding?

  • Embrace the learning curve. Learning is a continuous process. You’re never truly “done” with learning in the IT world. The key is to make it fun and find a learning style that works for you.
  • Find your tribe. Surround yourself with passionate coders. Connect with them online or offline through coding meetups or communities.
  • Build your dream projects. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Build something you’re passionate about, even if it’s just for fun.
  • Seek out mentorship. Find someone who’s been there and done that. Someone who can offer guidance and support.
  • Remember why you started. Think back to those shs days. What made you fall in love with coding? What challenges excited you? What motivated you to pursue this career path?

Finding My Way Back

I’m still working on finding my way back to that passionate coder I used to be. It’s not always easy, but I’m taking it one step at a time. I’m embracing the learning curve, connecting with other devs, and building my own projects.

I’m also learning to be kinder to myself. It’s okay to not have all the answers. It’s okay to feel lost sometimes.

And remember, it’s not a race. We all learn at our own pace. We all have our own “prime days.” The key is to never give up on ourselves and to keep searching for that spark.

So, if you’re feeling a little lost or uninspired, remember you’re not alone. Take a deep breath, grab a cup of coffee (or your preferred caffeine of choice), and let’s keep coding! ☕️💻

Just because the “prime days” are gone, doesn’t mean our journey is over. It just means it’s time for a new adventure.
